Bruce was one of the chief engineers who built the St. Johns River jetties.

Mayport staved off Jacksonville refugees during the 1888 yellow fever epidemic.

Napoleon Bonaparte Broward, a river man with close ties to Mayport, rose to be Governor.

Always separate in mind from Jacksonville Beach, Neptune Beach was born of revolt.
