The legendary Ish Brant

Ish W. Brant

Ish W. Brant, 96, of Neptune Beach, died Thursday, Jan. 2, 2003 at Baptist Medical Center-Beaches. Born Oct. 3, 1906, near Ocala, Fla., he was awarded bachelor's and master's degree from the University of Florida, where he lettered in track, baseball and football. He was a coach and teacher at Cocoa [Florida] High School and was elected to the Cocoa City Council. After moving to Neptune Beach, in 1942, Mr. Brant was assistant principal and head football coach at Fletcher High School, three-term mayor of Neptune Beach and was the last elected Duval County schools superintendent. He helped establish Florida Community College at Jacksonville, where he was later athletic director and a professor. He was city manager of Jacksonville Beach; three-term council member of Neptune Beach; was a member of the Duval County Civil Service Board; a charter member of the Beaches Area Historical Society and of the Kiwanis Club of the Jacksonville Beaches and was a 33rd degree Scottish Rite Mason. He was president of the Jacksonville Beaches Shrine Club, was active at St. Paul's By-The-Sea Episcopal Church and held numerous other memberships, offices and directorships.  He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Marye S. Brant; son Terry (Diane) Brant; daughter Vernisher Brant-Lang; grandson Darly Knoedler-Brant, and two nephews.  A family visitation will be held at Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home, 1701 Beach Blvd., Jacksonville Beach, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10, with a service at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, at St. Paul's By-The-Sea Episcopal Church, 465 11th Ave. N., Jacksonville Beach, with the Rev. Suddath R. Cummings and the Rev. Edward Harrison officiating. Following cremation, he will be interred at St. Paul's memorial garden during a family ceremony.  Memorials may be made to the Ish Brant Scholarship Fund, c/o Kiwanis Club, P.O.
